INTRO: "Check The Weather Forecasts Before Traveling"

Dear reader,

One of the important lessons learned from the recent hurricane season and storms that passed by in August, is that when traveling you should always check the weather forecasts at your destination before the start of your trip. It would make sense to consider travel and trip cancellation insurance, especially when booking to travel during hurricane seasons.

A post by RickyG on the SBHonline forum called "Airport Sheep" caught my attention. The post contained RickyG's photo of sheep under a tree in a field behind the gas station on the road next the St. Barths Gustavia airport.

"Airport Sheep" by RickyG - St. Barths

This photo reminded of an old photo I had in my Aviation Pioneers of the Caribbean collection. This photo featured the St. Barths airport when it was just a grass airstrip and sheep roamed the field grazing. I have no idea where or from whom I got this photo or what year it was taken, but it is certainly from the days when Remy de Haenen first flew in and out of St. Barths.

These photo's inspired to write the outline for a short story that I hope to work out further one day. You can find this short story outline below in this edition of the AirStMaarten newsletter. It is called "Sheep On The St. Barths Airport Runway".

Happy Readings!

In case you are reading about AirStMaarten's private charters program for the first time, here is some background information on our shared charters.

WHAT ARE SHARED CHARTERS?
A Shared Charter is when you book a Private Charter and you Only Pay for the Seat You Occupy. Not for the whole aircraft. AirStMaarten has been successfully organizing shared charters to St. Barths since November 2006.

HOW OUR SHARED CHARTERS WORK
Travel Agents and clients book our shared charters for seamless connections and hassle-free transfers to St. Barths and surrounding islands such as Anguilla, St. Kitts, Nevis, St. Eustatius, Antigua and Tortola.

HERE IS HOW OUR SHARED CHARTERS WORK...
1) If 1 or 2 people request to share a private charter, the shared charter is scheduled.
2) Once 3 or 4 people book the shared charter, the shared charter is confirmed and you are good to go!

If the shared charter is not confirmed, passengers are booked on a regular commercial flight with complimentary VIP Services to ensure their transit is smooth and hassle-free.

Visit www.sharedcharters.com for more information, scheduling and availabilities.

3. ARTICLE: "Sheep On The St. Barths Airport Runway"

Terrance Rey avatar "Sheep On The St. Barths Airport Runway"

A Short Story Outline by Terrance Rey

Even after ten years it still seems strange to me to see sheep grazing on the St. Barths airport runway as I stand in line queuing up to the St. Barths airport terminal building's standardized transporter and I looked out the window thinking about the scene I was seeing before me. I would often think about the days when Remy de Haenen would fly over the St. Barths airport runway to buzz the sheep, goats and cows grazing on the runway out of the way before making his landing on the grassy short airstrip. The St. Barths runway, like most runways after the oil ran out, was relegated to being used as grazing pastures for the animals that slowly took over the task of maintaining the grass fields that these airport runways had turned into. Travel was now a matter of queuing up in line in front of ominous looking machines that many people were still scared of entering because of the many accidents the first couple of years when people disappeared, never to reappear ever again. The technology had since been perfected to the point where disappearances were virtually impossible, but the fear remained nonetheless. I always make it a point to alleviate my fears by counting the sheep I saw outside the terminal building on the grassy strips between the tarmac and the runway of the St. Barths airport before entering the transporter machine. I usually timed the countdown to entering the machine with the number of sheep I see outside. Today it was twenty one. 19, 20, 21 and in I step into the machine as the door closes with a hiss behind me and the door in front me zips open and I step out into the terminal building of the SXM Airport. "Welcome to St. Maarten, Mr. Rey" the Immigration Officer says.
