INTRO: What's The Latest In St. Barths?

Dear friends and clients,

I just got back from St. Barths. As usual, I stayed at the Normandie Hotel. Had drinks and dinner with Normandie Hotel owner, Dennis Carlton, who is always in the know on the island's latest developments. The Normandie Hotel will be closed for the month of September for renovations and improvements. I look forward to my next stay there.

We also had lunch on Sunday with Albert of La Gloriette's fame. Albert is also closing the restaurant for the slow season. Sunday night was the last night to get La Gloriette's famous pizza's. I am going to miss the cool eastwind breeze blowing in over the lagoon.

Had a little business meeting with Mr. Bruno Magras in his office at the St. Barth Commuter office at the St. Barths airport. The fleet of St. Barth Commuter is now solely comprised of Cessna Grand Caravans and another one is on the way. The last Britton Norman Islander has been sold last month and is now in Trinidad getting new livrey before flying on to its new station in Guyana.

Interestingly enough, the new developments in St. Barths pertains to two new luxury resorts in the planning. That means there will be more need for high-end airlift into St. Barths and that is always good news for AirStMaarten as it means more business for our Shared Charters programme.

More on these new luxury resort projects further down in this issue and next month's issue. For now, please read below about our low season specials where our shared charter programme is concerned.

Presently, we are using the summer season to test some new travel services and new destinations in the Caribbean we have not been servicing at all in the past with our shared charters programme. Destinations such as Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad. In December we are planning to service Suriname, Haiti and Miami with a Christmas shared charter.

A Shared Charter is when you book a Private Charter and you Only Pay for the Seat You Occupy. Not for the whole aircraft. AirStMaarten has been successfully organizing shared charters to St. Barths since November 2006.

3. ARTICLE: Plans For New Luxury Hotel In Flamands, St. Barths

True to the policy that bigger is not better, the Collectivité of Saint Barthelemy has approved the building permits for a new small scale luxury resort in Flamands, St. Barths.

The new luxury resort property will consist of 46 rooms. Whether it will be a four or a 5-star resort is yet to be determined by the Collectivité according to insiders on the know.

Apparently, the developer is Mr. Guillermo Pardo, a Venezuelan developer of luxury hotel properties. The Colectivité hopes that the property will bring more South American visitors to St. Barths. The property is 8000 square meters, which is roughly 86,000 square feet, making it just under two acres, and located along the road that leads to Hôtel Baie des Anges.

It is said that it will be the first time Guillermo Pardo of Luxury Scapes is moving into the hotel business in St. Barths and he will be the property developer while top hotelier, Hans Maissen, will be in charge of the design.

Whatever the star rating of this new luxury resort in Flamands will be, it will definitely be good for business in terms of attracting new visitors from the South American content as the new owners plans to do a lot of promotion in South America (Venezuela and Brazil) to attract high-end guests to the resort.

We at AirStMaarten will definitely be looking forward to serving the South American markets with private and shared charters into St. Barths. Hopefully, we will soon be adding a new Cessna Grand Caravan to the fleet of available aircrafts specifically hired for these AirSXM air charter services.

5. NEWS ITEM: Update #3 On AirSXM Request To Do Scheduled Flights

PHILIPSBURG--CEO of AirStMaarten, Terrance Rey, recently revealed that last year October 2013 he had quietly submitted a request to the Ministry of Transportation on St. Maarten in order to obtain a new business license to do scheduled flights.

As President of the Board and Managing Director of the company, Rey, had had several meetings with authorities at the Department of Civil Aviation in St. Maarten before a positive advice was rendered by the department.

The advice had followed its way via the various departments within the Ministry of Transportation before finally reaching the minister's desk for signing.

UPDATE #2: The Minister of Transportation has signed off on the business license request.

UPDATE #3: The Ministry of Transportation has released the signed business license to the management of AirSXM. Below are the scans of business license consisting of two pages. The next step is to obtain the economic certification of the company as a full-fledge airline company. That part of the process will result in the Economic Operating Certificate (EOC). Once that document is received, the process to achieve flight certification will be initiated by the company's management in order to obtain an Air Operator's Certificate (AOC).
